CHARACTER INFO

• Character Name: Eddie Munson
• Character Age: 20
• Character Canon: Stranger Things
• Canon Point: S4 finale

• Character History: here!

• Character Personality:

— OPEN-MINDED: ā€œNever change, Dustin Henderson. Promise me?ā€

Something Eddie admires above all other qualities is individualism. Face it: it’s easy to conform, to do things or pretend to be into things that will earn you popularity and acceptance among your peers. It’s not quite as easy to unabashedly be yourself, or to listen to and endure the mockery just because you’re a little bit different.

Eddie likes metal music. He likes Dungeons and Dragons and Lord of the Rings. He has never once tried to run away from that. He never pretends to be someone else or feigns interest in more "acceptable" things. With satanic panic on the rise, it makes it kind of hard for him to exist in his small midwestern town, but he’s is fine with being different, and he’s fine with being viewed as weird and considered a ā€œfreakā€.

He feels the same about others as well. Eddie views himself as something of a shepherd for all the outcasts and outsiders in Hawkins, and he has an immense soft spot for those who don’t conform or stand out as a little odd. He is more than happy to call Chrissy Cunningham a freak simply for remembering the name of his band, and to him, it’s not an insult. It’s a badge of honor. His favorite member of Hellfire (he does play favorites and we’re not going to pretend he doesn’t) is Dustin Henderson, who is someone who hasĀ neverĀ been afraid to be himself.Ā He doesn’t warm to Steve Harrington until he realizes the guy is more than high school royalty with rich parents, but after that? He accepts him as a "pretty cool guy". If you’re a bit off-kilter, Eddie is there to support you.

— CREATIVE: "What do you say, Henderson? Are you ready for the most metal concert in the history of the world?"

So, Eddie isn’t much for academics. He’s a super senior, taking his senior year of high school for the third time, and he clearly struggles with school for one reason or another. He is, however, wildly creative.

This is best exemplified by the fact that he’s a musician, and not a bad one either. His band, Corroded Coffin, has been together since middle school and they play at local dive bars every week. Looking at the s4 timeline, Metallica’s Master of Puppets album had only been out for about a week. Eddie taught himself the guitar part to the title track in that amount of time—likely by ear alone, which is really nothing to scoff at.

He's the DM for a Dungeons and Dragons club which in and of itself requires a lot of creativity, even if you are working for pre-written campaigns, and while it's not necessarily confirmed canon, but it’s worth mentioning that in behind the scenes features, we’re shown a lot of hand drawn D&D character sheets and band posters in Eddie’s room. It isn’t a stretch to assume these are meant to be things he drew himself. It’s implied he designed the Hellfire logo as well.

His creativity isn’t all the arts, though. He’s not exactly a survival type of guy, but his creativity can potentially come in handy there anyway. After all, it’s Eddie’s idea to set up his amp and give a concert to an audience of one in the Upside Down to act as a distraction.

— HELPFUL: "I say you're asking me to follow you into Mordor, which if I'm totally straight with you, I think is a really bad idea. But the shire is burning, so Mordor it is.ā€

Yes, Eddie is a coward. We’ll talk more about that later. Eddie isn’t a survivalist and he’s not the most athletic guy in the world, but he’s not riding on anyone’s coattails in that regard. He is perfectly capable of holding his own, and he has the desire to be helpful and pull his weight.

Eddie doesn't have to jump into the lake after a group of people he only really met a few days ago, but he does. It’s Eddie who points the rest of the toward the War Zone, an army/navy surplus store where they can buy weapons to help defeat the season’s big bad. When they require the use of a vehicle, it’s also Eddie who hot-wires an RV for them. It’s Eddie whose morse code gets the attention of Dustin, Lucas and Erica through the lights, and Eddie and his guitar act as a distraction for the demobats. HeĀ isĀ brave and capable and always willing to offer his services; he’s just anxiety-ridden.

— COWARDLY: ā€Outside of D&D, I am no hero. I see danger and I just turn heel and run.ā€

It’s hard to say if Eddie was particularly cowardly before the events of season four, but he is now, and it’s a major part of his personality. Seeing Chrissy Cunningham die in his trailer turns him into a frantic, anxious person who jumps at every little sound. He’s constantly running away: from the basketball team who hold him accountable for Chrissy’s death, from the police who view him as the only person of interest in the case, and he runs from the scene when Chrissy is killed, leaving his uncle to pick up the pieces.Ā He admits to it, he never once denies it: he’s a coward, and he hates it. The guilt he feels over not being able to save Chrissy nags at him for the rest of the season. Although there was logically nothing he really could have done (and heĀ knowsĀ this), he still beats himself up over the fact that he ran away and left her there all alone:Ā ā€I didn't know what to do, so I...I ran away. I left her there.ā€

It’s what kills him in the end: his desire to ā€œredeemā€ himself for running away. He plays his role in defeating Vecna, acting as a distraction to draw the demobats away from the gate so the others can enter, but ultimately feels like he hasn’t done enough. That’s when he decides to stop running, to turn around, go back and hold the bats off for longer by himself. It’s a brave act, and as he dies from his wounds, he reassures himself that heĀ ā€didn’t run away this time.ā€

— UNAPPROACHABLE: ā€Shit, he seems really revved up today.ā€ ā€œHe’s always revved up.ā€

To people who really don’t know or have a relationship Eddie, he can come across as incredibly intense, short-tempered, and unapproachable, especially when it comes to the things he really cares about.

He’s just…kind of loud and bombastic and it’s easy to see why he’s been dubbed with the moniker of ā€œfreakā€. He gives entire speeches about why conformity is ā€œthe real monsterā€ and shouts loudly about how his music is music. With Hellfire Club, he runs a tight ship. HeĀ requires members to find substitutes to stand in for them when they aren’t going to be available and refusing to cancel or reschedule for anyone. He snaps at Mike and Dustin for not being prepared with a substitute for Lucas and he’s quick to judge Erica Sinclair, mocking her until she shows that, yeah, she actually does know D&D. He doesn't exactly welcome anyone with open arms, but when you get to know him, it's pretty clear that it's mostly surface level and he's just super passionate and not half as bad as he looks.

— TROUBLEMAKER: ā€Looks like that Munson boy’s up to no good again.ā€

So here’s the thing about Eddie Munson: he is misunderstood, but he’s definitely not a saint. The dude is a known drug dealer, and he will sell you drugs and won’t stop to consider that ketamine probably isn’t the best choice for someone whose anxiety is already sky high. He’ll happily mock you in the cafeteria for your conformity while making gremlin noises to assure you that, yes, he might very well be Satan incarnate, how kind of you to notice.

He’s a troublemaker. It’s not necessarily the harmful sort of trouble so much as the ā€œTP your house and draw crude graffiti in the bathroom stallsā€ type of trouble, but it's hard to deny that Edide Munson sure does love to cause a stir, especially if he can get a rise out of someone else. This is very well exemplified in his introduction. He causes a whole scene in the cafeteria, standing on tables, loudly calling people out for the sin of...being in science club(?), terrorizing girls who are just walking by. People see him as scary, so why not play into it a little bit?

His neighbors seem to realize he’s a troublemaker as well, not acting particularly surprised when the police arrive at his trailer the morning after Chrissy dies, but it's worth mentioning that he tries his best to keep himself in check and not to let it get too out of hand. He helps to steal and hotwire an RV later in the season (out of necessity), and he laments:

ā€œWhen the other dads were teaching their kids how to fish or play ball, my old man was teaching me how to hot-wire. Now, I swore to myself I wouldn’t wind up like he did, but now? I’m wanted for murder and soon, grand theft auto, so I’m really living up to that Munson name.ā€
